Well, *ShatteredVerse Enthusiasts, it's been a while. Far too long, I'm afraid. For reasons beyond our control, *ShatteredVerse has not been as active in recent months. We miss the fun times and the wonderful people we've been associated with in the past, and hope we can make up for lost time.

Our New Year's Resolution to you, our Members and Friends, is to rebuild the club, and regain our former pizzazz. We hope you will be patient with us as we proceed to reactivate chat and club activities, such as Collaborations (formal and spontaneous), Competitions, PotW, PotM, and other projects.

This unforeseen six month hiatus, we believe, has yielded some much needed regrouping time, and hopefully will allow us a fresh start.

Much love to all of you, and we wish you all a safe and wonderful holiday season.

Interest in the chatroom is high in the evenings but still lacking during the day, if you are interested in a possible staff position there please send me a note and include staff or chatroom in the subject line. Please let me know what you would be interested in helping with.

We have one very lonely entry for the summer competition. In order to update the competition journal I would like to see more entries please. Same thing with the carry-on collab. We have only a bit added, if you are interested in contributing please go check it out.

A belated congratulations is in order for =dreamersrapture, ~dieinfaith, and ~SpiritoCustode for the Poetry Month Competition. All the entries that were submitted can now of course be posted to your page if you haven't done so already. Thanks to all that participated and of course a big thanks to the judges in the competition.

National Poetry Month

The month of April is National Poetry Month. There are numerous activities around for those who wish to participate in the activities or celebrations. One such source of activity is www.poets.org, and it may be worth taking a look.

To celebrate National Poetry Month will be holding an extra contest over the month of April. The rules are few and simple:

1. You must be a member of ShatteredVerse to enter.

2. Your poem must be 50 lines or less.

3. The poem must be a formal poetic form such as a Sestina, Luc Bat, Haiku etc.

4. Entries may not be posted before the competition is judged and the winner announced, which will occur at the beginning of May.

5. Note your entry to ShatteredVerse with "Poetry Month - (Poetic form used)" as the subject.

6. Entries close April 30th 2006.

The winning poet will recieve a 12 month subscription to Deviantart or a print of equal or lesser value.

The runner-up will recieve a 3 month subscription to Deviantart or a print of equal or lesser value.

We often see the beauty of the facade; the attractive looks, the dazzling smile, the perfect figure. Enamoured by this illusion we are happy and content. But what does the mirror see that we don't? What would it really show if only we looked? What do others truly see?

Join us as we peer into this image and view the ugliness within. During this Collab we are going to try something a little different, so come and help expose and examine The Beast In The Beauty.



This month, and next, we’re trying something different again! For our May/June carry-on we will incorporate a simple format of iambic pentameter (5 metric feet per line) and six-line stanzas. There is no rhyme scheme. We ask that you affix at least 2 lines of your own, and no more than 4 in one turn. Don’t worry about submitting the odd 3 lines, if it comes to your first line being line six, finish off the stanza and create the first line of the next! If you choose to participate again, please allow one or more collaborators to add their lines. Then feel free to submit again!

Iambic pentameter is used widely throughout poetry. Our verses do not have to be Shakespearean, however. All we are looking for in this piece is five feet (approximately 10 syllables) per line. The most common foot is, obviously, the iamb. The iamb is composed of one unstressed and one stressed syllable, generally illustrated as ( x / ), or “da DUM”. Examples can be found at [link]

The second most common foot is the anapest. This contains two unstressed and one stressed syllable ( x x / ), or “da da DUM.” Examples of such can be found here: [link] .

We would like you to please stick to iambs and anapests only. Also, direct any questions to *NovembreChuchote or ~RebeccaA, who will be happy to assist you.
